NEWS

Meta’s Orion AR glasses

It rumored that Meta is working on smart AR glasses set to appear in the Meta Connect late 2024. Dubbed internally as ‘Orion’ AR glasses, they are a separate smart glasses from the recently launched Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses.

While the Meta AR glasses in the market are focused on gaming, these ‘ Orion’ glasses supposed to be more technologically advanced with a visual element.

OPPO’s AR glasses prototype

The Chinese smartphone maker unveiled their AR glasses dubbed ‘Oppo Air Glass 3 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The glasses needed to be tethered to OPPO smartphones and users control glasses with touch sensors on the side of the frame.

Powered the Chinese giant’s large-language-model (LLM), called AndesGPT, the Air Glasses 3 will have voice assistant which will be able “performing information searches and conducting conversations to assist users in tasks like planning travel,”

Tecno Pocket Go AR glasses

The smartphone giant recently unveiled their AR glasses dubbed Pocket Go. The company claims it’s the world’s first Windows-based AR gaming kit. The kit includes the following;

• a pair of AR glasses fitted with 0.71-inch Micro-OLED display units.

• visual experience of a 215-inch large screen at a perceived distance of six meters.

• support adjustment for users who wear prescription glasses or lenses

Scape Bites

eToro on AVP - The online brokerage firm is building its retail trading app to VR/AR headsets on Vision Pro and Meta Quest. However, the company did not give the timeline for the app launch.

Meta x LG - These two tech giants are partnering to launch an XR headset to take on Apple Vision Pro. The upcoming headset may be called the Meta Quest Pro 2 and is expected to make an appearance sometime early next year.

Apple’s patent case - The tech giant filed a lawsuit in Virginia federal court challenging the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's refusal to grant trademarks covering the company's augmented-reality software development tools "Reality Composer" and "Reality Converter."

HARDWARE

HTC Vive Pro 2

The Vive Pro 2 full kit headsets costs $1,399.0 as per the company site. Below is the analysis of the VR headset.

Design - The Vive Pro 2 retains the familiar design of its predecessor, with a focus on comfort and adjustability. The head strap features a dial for easy size adjustments, and the soft, replaceable face cushion ensures breathability during extended use. It's one of the most comfortable VR headsets on the market, even for those who wear glasses.

Controllers- The Vive Pro 2 retains the same Vive wands as the previous model. While they are functional, they lack the thumbstick and ergonomic design of newer controllers, feeling slightly bulky and dated. This is a missed opportunity, especially considering the premium price point.

Optics - The Vive Pro 2 boasts a stunning 5K resolution (2448 x 2448 per eye) with a 120Hz refresh rate. This translates to incredibly sharp visuals, with minimal screen door effect and a significant improvement over previous generations. The 120Hz refresh rate ensures smooth and fluid motion, eliminating motion sickness for most users. However, the switch from OLED to LCD panels results in deeper blacks being sacrificed for improved brightness and reduced screen persistence.

Performance -The Vive Pro 2 requires a powerful PC to reach its full potential. This translates to smooth performance in most VR experiences, but users with lower-end hardware might face limitations and need to adjust graphics settings. The included base stations provide accurate and reliable room-scale tracking, essential for immersive VR experiences.

Battery Life - As the Vive Pro 2 is tethered to a PC, battery life isn't a concern. However, users should ensure their PC has sufficient power output to keep the headset running smoothly.

Audio Experience - The integrated headphones deliver decent audio quality, but they lack the depth and immersion of dedicated VR headphones or separate speakers. Users looking for the best audio experience might want to invest in additional equipment.

GAMING

Until You Fall

This a 2020 hack and slash roguelike video game developed and published by Schell Game. The game costs $24.99 and is available on several headsets including PlayStation 4 & 5, Meta Quest and Microsoft Windows.

Synopsis

The accounting giant released a report on Metaverse covering the development stages in the space.

An example company getting into the extended reality (XR) include Bytedance - TikTok parent company acquired Pico. This shows determination to expand businesses in the XR field and encouraging more tech companies to make strategic moves into the XR industry.
